Vermont Afterschool Receives STEM Policy Grant

Posted on November 14th, 2016 in: Blog

Vermont Afterschool is excited to announce that we have received an Advancing Afterschool STEM Policy Grant through the Afterschool Alliance with support from the Overdeck Family Foundation. The timing of this grant and the opportunity it provides could not have been better arranged for the policy decisions being debated at this time with recent education legislation in Vermont and discussions about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Significant changes are happening across Vermont’s education landscape. Our challenge over the next few years is to ensure that STEM in afterschool and summer is a critical component of these initiatives, including personalized, student-centered, and proficiency-based learning. The window of opportunity for bringing STEM forward in Vermont with connections to workforce development, youth outcomes, and educational opportunity is now; Vermont Afterschool is committed to action that will ensure STEM in afterschool and summer is an integral and essential component of Vermont’s vision for education.

The $20,000 grant will support three short-term goals that will be undertaken in 2016-2017:

  1. Raise Awareness;
  2. Increase Local Funding;
  3. Establish State Priorities.

Ultimately, our goals under the STEM Policy Grant will align with our overarching advocacy work to ensure that all Vermont students have access to quality out-of-school time STEM experiences; that state and school leaders will include out-of-school time STEM experiences when looking at educational equity and opportunity; and that Vermont will have strong and viable funding streams in order to offer more quality out-of-school time STEM programs for students at all ages.
