McClure Grant

To support our STEM Initiative, Vermont Afterschool, Inc. received a $30,000 grant from the J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation for the 2018-2019 school year to create meaningful job and expanded learning opportunities for students across rural Vermont.

GOALS:

  • Training high school students in rural areas to deliver content around science, technology, engineering,and mathematics (STEM) to their local afterschool and summer learning programs.
  • Supporting older youth in the work-based learning process by helping them to develop job skills, improve their instructional practices, as well as connecting them to different career paths.
  • Providing jobs for high school students who will receive compensation for their time and are located in areas of the state where finding part-time work can be challenging for youth.
  • Increasing access to STEM programs during the out-of-school time for elementary school age children.

1. All-4-One, Springfield School District
2. AIM, Windham Northeast SU
3. Crossroads, Franklin Northwest SU
4. One Planet, White River Valley SU

FY18 DATA:

43 teens were trained to teach STEM activities at their local afterschool programs

Teens received a total of 38 hours of training in teaching, classroom management, and workforce skills

300 youth in grades 2-6 participated in the STEM afterschool programs taught by teens

11 afterschool programs sites participated across five rural SUs
