Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Is Here!

Vermont Afterschool Inc. is launching a state-wide pilot project designed to enhance social-emotional competence in school-aged children. Your school’s afterschool program has been chosen to receive staff support and training in implementation of the PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) Curriculum. In the next few months, afterschool staff will be working hard to learn the program and to provide lessons for students around feelings identification, friendship skills, self-esteem, and social problem solving.  social-and-emotional-learning-core-competencies

The PATHS curriculum is highly respected and evidence-based.  It is designed to:

  • Promote social and emotional competence
  • Prevent or reduce behavioral and emotional problems in young children
  • Prevent future adjustment problems through the development & integration of essential skills in emotional literacy, behavioral self-control, and problem solving.
  • Improve the social & academic climate of the program and school.

We will be collecting data about how this program works along the way with the hopes of expanding our support of social-emotional learning in afterschool. You can support your students in practicing their new skills by asking about their feelings and what they are learning about problem solving in afterschool. Feel free to talk with your afterschool director about sitting in on a lesson or looking through the curriculum materials too.
