Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Is Here!

Vermont Afterschool Inc. launched a state-wide pilot project in 2017 designed to enhance social-emotional competence in school-aged children. Licensed, afterschool programs were selected to receive staff support and training in implementation of the PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) Curriculum. social-and-emotional-learning-core-competencies

The PATHS curriculum is highly respected and evidence-based.  It is designed to:

  • Promote social and emotional competence
  • Prevent or reduce behavioral and emotional problems in young children
  • Prevent future adjustment problems through the development & integration of essential skills in emotional literacy, behavioral self-control, and problem solving.
  • Improve the social & academic climate of the program and school.

We will be collecting data about how this program works along the way with the hopes of expanding our support of social-emotional learning in afterschool. Future efforts in our SEL project will focus on bolstering afterschool staffs’ SEL competencies, addressing adverse childhood experiences, and partnering with community stakeholders to coordinate systems of care for children and families.

SEL Partnerships

Vermont Afterschool has joined with VSA Vermont to host a series of social and emotional learning partner opportunities in 2017 and 2018. Our common goal to to highlight the amazing work of our community in the realm of social and emotional learning and to strengthen networks between agencies and stakeholders moving forward. Our vision of every youth in Vermont living up to to his or her full potential starts with a strong community of committed partners.

In addition to a web-based home, we’d like to announce a couple of face-to-face events in October. Here are two opportunities to connect, inspire, and be inspired by the good work we are all doing in the realm of social and emotional learning. Both events will take place at Vermont Afterschool, 123 Ethan Allen Avenue, Colchester, VT 05446. Please RSVP by sending an email to our SEL Coordinator Sara Forward!

  • SEL Social Hour: Tuesday, October 10th, 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. We will have a brief presentation followed by structured networking and social time. Bring your own bag lunch and come learn about what work others are doing in our state. OPEN TO ALL – Feel free to invite colleagues so that we can broaden our network!
  • Focus Group #1: Common Language: Wednesday, October 25th, 9:00 am to 11:00 am. In a facilitated discussion we will take a deep dive into the language that intersects this work, from “non-cognitive skills” to “social and emotional learning” and more, and we will discuss ways that common language can elevate statewide understanding of our efforts and mission. OPEN TO THOSE COMMITTING TO ALL FOUR FOCUS GROUP SESSIONS. Details to follow regarding focus group dates and topics.
