Director of Expanded Learning

Reports to: Executive Director, Vermont Afterschool, Inc.

Summary: As the field of afterschool and summer learning has grown in extent and expectations over the past few years, Vermont Afterschool is hiring a Director of Expanded Learning to oversee our statewide quality efforts and ensure we are supporting the field in a comprehensive and interconnected way. Working closely with the entire team at Vermont Afterschool, this position is primarily responsible for providing leadership and direction around statewide professional development efforts, program quality, and key education initiatives. This position, while not working directly with children, is a job that directly supports others who work to improve the lives of children, youth, and families throughout Vermont. The Director of Expanded Learning must have the ability to multi-task with ease; be creative, innovative, and collaborative; and possess very strong written, verbal, leadership, and project management skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Coaching, Technical Assistance, and Ongoing Professional Development. Oversee and coordinate Vermont Afterschool’s professional development offerings including: virtual and onsite small group coaching; topic-driven professional learning communities; a wide range of high quality, accessible training and technical assistance opportunities; and local communities of practice.
  • Build Alignment with Key Education Initiatives. Continue to build connections for out-of-school time programs to the formal education system, particularly around Vermont’s understanding of Expanded Learning Opportunities as part of a larger education agenda for flexible pathways (e.g., personalized learning plans, proficiency-based graduation requirements, and work-based learning).
  • Support Statewide Systems for STEM and SEL. Continue to improve the quality of and extent of afterschool and summer STEM programming (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) supports across the state.
  • Expand Training and Supports for those Working with Older Youth. Develop new strategies and professional development opportunities to improve the quality of out-of-school time programming and supports for older youth in Vermont (e.g., middle school, high school, young adults).
  • Build Connections that Promote Career Pathways and Micro-credentials for Afterschool. Partner with higher education and regional tech centers to promote career pathways in youth work and afterschool, and develop a framework for Vermont Afterschool to offer micro-credentials in areas such as Social Emotional Learning (SEL), College/Career Pathways, and STEM.
  • Play a Key Role on Our Team. The Director of Expanded Learning will need to work collaboratively with other members of the Vermont Afterschool team, serve in a leadership capacity, and collaborate with key partners across the state. The Director of Expanded Learning will also work closely with the Executive Director on grant writing and reporting, partnership development, policy connections, and project evaluation, and may be asked to assume other duties as determined by the Executive Director.

Essential Skills Needed:

  • Significant training and experience in education, youth work, and/or afterschool. BA degree required; MA preferred; at least 3 years working with children in school or afterschool settings as well as experience providing quality coaching and/or mentoring support to professionals.
  • Demonstrated vision and passion for supporting others in creating positive environments for the learning, care, and development of children and youth.
  • Familiarity with professional development models, including best practices for supporting adult learners.
  • Understanding of key elements of quality afterschool programming, including social emotional learning, work-based learning, personalized learning, and STEM learning.
  • Demonstrated organizational and/or project leadership skills including: collecting and analyzing data; writing reports; developing outreach materials; and fostering positive relationships with a wide variety of afterschool providers, school-based educators, and families.
  • Ability to work independently and with self-direction.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including proven record of working collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to multi-task with excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Confidence in solving problems with tenacity and perseverance.
  • Understanding of standard evaluation methods and the ability to analyze data to inform project direction and determine training priorities.
  • Proficiency in the use of technology, including MS office products (e.g., Word, Excel, Publisher), and the ability to produce documents and reports that are well-written and well-presented.
  • Reliable transportation required. This position will require travel throughout Vermont at all times of year and may require time in the evenings or on the weekends.

This position will be based out of Vermont Afterschool’s offices in Colchester, VT.
